The Numbers

Why is it when a woman says she was hassled by someone in the auto industry nobody is surprised?

I have found that when I tell people I had trouble with a mechanic treating me poorly, people aren’t phased. It has become a generally accepted thing that women have a harder time navigating the auto industry than men. But how often is it actually happening? Is it really something that is widespread? How bad is it really? The numbers show it is in fact a deep-rooted problem.

We influence a majority of car purchases

Today, more women aged 25 and up have driver’s licenses than their male counterparts in America, and we’re buying and driving more of the cars on the road as well.(1) Over 50% of all cars are purchased by women, and over 80% percent of all car purchases are influenced by women in one way or another.(2) In 2019 62% of new cars in the country were purchased by women.(4)

But we are still treated lesser

Even though we are a major customer demographic, 74% of women feel misunderstood by automotive marketers and 77% take a man along to a dealership to avoid getting taken advantage of.(6)(7) Most car buying advice sites tell women to bring a guy along to help them. If we have such a strong influence of vehicle purchases, why are we treated like we don’t matter on sales lots? Even from the beginning of a sale women are offered list prices hundreds of dollars higher than their male counterparts, and end up paying hundreds of dollars more on the final price as well.(3)(5)

And it’s not just in sales

71% think mechanics are condescending to women
— RepairPal polled consumers

The problem is evident at mechanic shops too. On a national scale, women are quoted 8% higher prices, and in big cities women are quoted 70% higher prices on repairs.(8) Women who indicated they did not know what price to expect were quoted prices 6% higher than men who said the exact same thing.(9)

We are a minority in the auto workforce too

Not only are women being overlooked as customers, but they are also underrepresented as employees in the industry. In 2020 women made up just 21% of all Auto Dealers and a measly 9% of the Repair and Maintenance sector.(14) Mind you, that is in all job positions within those categories. In the whole Motor Vehicle and Parts Dealers’ industry nearly 75% of the office and clerical jobs are women.(15) The higher up the management chain you look, the fewer women you see, with women only comprising 18.1% of mid-level managers and 17.6% of senior managers.(15) Of the top motor vehicles and parts companies in the Fortune Global 500, only 16 women were executives in 2018, compared with 178 men.(13)

All these statistics make me furious

Why have we accepted this as a normal thing? Finding out just how widespread the issue is, I decided I had to do something. I went into the industry to learn the secrets of the trade so I could use them to your advantage. I have done the research, read the articles, made the network connections, all so I can help you navigate the industry without falling into the gimmicks they try to pull—so I can be your “guy” who sees to it you get what you want, and you aren’t taken advantage of in any aspect of your vehicle needs. Women make up a majority percentage of decision makers in the car buying process but are disregarded by the entire auto industry. We are quoted and charged higher prices than our male counterparts and on average will pay thousands of dollars more during the ownership of a vehicle.(11) Plain and simple that is just not right. It is my mission to use my insider knowledge to fight for you, so you get the vehicle you want at a fair price.

Only 38% of women are confident when buying a car. I am changing that.
